Woodberry Golfers Shatter Records

This spring, Woodberry’s golf team set a new standard for excellence. Coach Hogan’s squad went undefeated in regular-season play.

At the 48th Virginia Prep League Golf Championship, the undefeated Woodberry Forest Tigers shot a tournament-record 270 to win by 17 shots.

Hosted by Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet, the 6,600 course played to a par 72. Woodberry came in as the favorites but had not won a league title since 2019.

The Tiger’s stiffest competition would come from defending champion St. Christopher’s. The Saints posted their best score of the season, a one-under-par mark of 287, which was the lowest score in the Prep League tournament since St. Christopher’s winning score of 285 in 2018 at Keswick Golf Club.

Led by a pair of 63s (-9) from Mack Edwards ’25 and James Doyle ’26, Woodberry shot a team- and tournament-record 270 to capture its 32nd VPL golf championship in historic fashion. The eighteen under-par mark shattered the 2018 record of three under, held by St. Christopher's, and bettered the Tigers’ best VPL tournament round of 280.

Edwards had a perfect card, notching seven birdies and one eagle without a bogey. Doyle garnered eight birdies and one eagle, with a bogey on the par-three seventh hole. Both players had an incredible 30 (-6) on their back nines en route to earning All-Prep and co-Player of the Year honors.

This was Mack's second VPL medalist title. It is James’s first. The rounds of 63 are records for the VPL tournament and for a Woodberry Forest player in any round. Woodberry has had 27 individual medalists in the VPL.

Captain Will Brown ’24 overcame a slow start (+2 after seven holes) to finish with a one-under-par round of 71. Brown earned his fourth All-Prep award, the third Woodberry player to do so.

“The course was pretty open and soft because of the rain, and the greens at Old Trail are big and easy to hit,” said Will. “We went into the tournament confident that we had a good chance to win, but I never thought we’d be able to go that low.”

“In my 30 years with the Woodberry Forest golf program, I have seen many memorable performances. Today’s was beyond anything I’ve witnessed or could have possibly imagined,” said Coach Hogan. “I felt like I was watching a video game.”

This was Coach Hogan’s 13th Prep League title, one more than his predecessor, Tom Bond. Both Bond and Hogan have more VPL golf titles than any other school (St. Christopher’s is second with nine).

The last undefeated Woodberry Forest Prep League team was in 2000.

The Tigers followed their Prep League performance with a gritty victory at the VISAA state championship that came down to a tiebreaker on the sixth scorecard. With the win, the 2024 squad became the first golf team in the school's history to go undefeated and win both the Prep League and state championships, an unprecedented treble. Captain Will Brown ’24 became the first player in school and VISAA history to earn all-state honors four times.
