VPL CHAMPS! (Summary)

Woodberry Forest used a strong back-nine performance to pull away from the field and successfully defend its Virginia Preparatory League golf title today at the Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet. The Tigers shot 285 (-3) to easily best second-place St. Christopher's score of 306. It is Woodberry's 33rd Prep League title in 49 championships. The following four Tiger golfers shot the lowest rounds of the tournament. Juniors James Doyle and Henry Cardwell both went under par on their second nines to shoot 70 (-2) and earn co-medalist honors. For James, it is his second straight shared VPL individual title. Both players also earned All-Prep status, Henry for the second time, James for the third. Co-captain Mack Edwards notched an eagle on the par-four 17th hole and then birdied the last hole to shoot 71 (-1) to keep his season-long, underpar match streak alive at ten. Mack earned his fourth All-Prep honor, only the fourth WFS golfer to accomplish this feat. Co-captain Tommy McMillan shot 74 to close out the team total and earn his third All-Prep honor. He joins teammate James Doyle on the list of eighteen previous WFS golfers who have won all-League status three times. James Gavin (77) and Alfred Hoak (81) also participated. The team's score of 285 ties the second-lowest in Prep League history, bettered only by Woodberry's score last year of 271 (-17). St Christopher's also shot 285 in 2018 at the Keswick Golf Club. The Tigers are the two-time defending VISAA state golf champions and will try to win a record third consecutive title on Monday at the Williamsburg National Golf Club's Yorktown course. 49th Virginia Preparatory League Golf Championship Old Trail Golf Club, Crozet 6600 yards, par 72 Team Result Woodberry Forest 285 (-3) St. Christopher's 306 Collegiate 311 St. Anne's-Belfield 328 Trinity Episcopal 332 Norfolk Academy 336 All-Prep (top 10) Henry Cardwell, James Doyle - 70 (-2), Woodberry Forest Mack Edwards - 71, Woodberry Forest Tommy McMillan - 74, Woodberry Forest
