Woodberry students piled up numerous honors in the 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, and three students advanced out of the regional competition to national judging. Michael Deng ’18 won two golden keys in the film and animation category for movies he’s produced during his time at Woodberry. Both Under the Windhorse and I'm Your Brother advanced to national judging.

The Talon 18-19 was rated a Gold Medalist by The Columbia Scholastic Press Association with All-Columbian Honors in Essentials, Verbal, and Visual categories. A judge noted that it takes a community to create a professional work:
Overall, this is an exceptional art and literary magazine. It is professional in appearance and the quality of work it showcases is intriguing and thought-provoking. There is also a wonderful range of contributors--both in the artists presented and in the review boards--which suggests a thriving environment for the arts and a care for the development of artistic craft. The editors and review boards should be proud of the magazine and the work it showcases--their care and attention to the details of the design is apparent. The inclusion of past cover art and the interviews honored tradition and the legacy that has been developed. I wish you continued success in your next 70 years of publication.

The National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) announced their finalists for individual awards for "Design of the Year" for literary magazines. NSPA noted, "Both the finalists and the winners will be recognized at the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention, Nov. 1-4, 2018 in Chicago."
Each magazine staff was able to enter two submissions. For the first time, both submissions featuring the design work of WFS students Blythe Brewster '20, Trip Hurley '18, and Hank Feng '18 were named as finalists. This year 1,100 digital, print newspapers, magazines and yearbooks published during the 2016-2017 academic year were eligible for judging in the 2018 Crown Awards Program.
The Crown Awards honor top student publications chosen from CSPA’s members. Crowns are selected for overall excellence in a head-to-head comparison. Student publishing in news, magazine, yearbook or digital (online) formats are all-eligible. During Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage and writing.
Michael Deng '18 earned national recognition with a Silver Medal in the 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in the Film & Animation category for his film Under the Windhorse.
National winners have been identified by panels of creative professionals as the most talented young artists and writers in the nation. Michael shot Under the Windhorse in August 2016 in the mountainous region of Liangshan in Sichuan province. In it, he records the story of a college student who returns from studying in Beijing to her home region to teach Chinese in a remote village. China’s Liangshan Mountains are home to Tibetan people whose geographical isolation limits their educational and career opportunities. Michael screened his film for the student body of Woodberry Forest in April 2017 and was supported in his project by the Class of 2008 Community Service grant, which helped him purchase or rent the equipment needed for the film. “Woodberry gave me the resources I needed to pursue my passion,” Michael says.
Michael also won a silver key in the dramatic script category for I’m Your Brother. Max Johns ’18 won a gold key for his short story, “The Neighborhood,” and Rhew Diegl ’20 won a gold key for his short story, “The Court of Law.” Those also advance to national judging. Rhew said his story was inspired by reading James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake. “Joyce liked to hide little tidbits of jokes or pop culture references in his writing, so I tried to do the same with The Court of Law,” Rhew said. “Part of what editing with peers teaches me is how to explain myself and hold myself accountable for what I write; before edits, the story contain a lot of images and scenarios that seemed cool but didn’t line up together, and the editors are pushing me to fix these flaws.”

The Talon editors earned the highest rating from the National Scholastic Press Association of "All American" for literary arts magazines with four marks of distinction for content, writing and editing, layout, and concept.

The contributions of talented authors, photographers, and artists to the 2014-2015 issues made this award possible. Here are a few comments from the judges:
- I am deeply impressed by the quality of the writing included in both magazines.... Keep doing what you're doing. You have a school/community of incredibly talented writers.
- Photography: Wow. What stunning pieces you have included in these issues. You do a beautiful job of using the photographs to their best and most powerful appeal in your layout design.... What these photographs have in common is that they are powerful on their own, no design was necessary to make them shine...The balance of the shapes and colors in these photos is well executed in addition to the uniqueness of the concept of the photo.
- What a beautifully produced set of magazines. There are so many layouts that are powerful in design, and by that I mean that they are visually arresting as well as using good design principles to unify the content in a consistent way. I noticed that the greatest strength in both issues is the use of the subtle background to tie the writing to the art or the photography.
