Woodberry Mourns the Death of Betty Wright

Betty Wright, who lived at Woodberry Forest from 1974 to 1991, died Friday May 24 in Orange.

Mrs. Wright first came to Woodberry when her former husband, Emmett Wright, joined the faculty as a history teacher and curriculum advisor. The Wrights departed in 1970 for New Orleans and returned in the summer of 1974 when Mr. Wright became the school’s sixth headmaster. Mrs. Wright was deeply devoted to the Woodberry community during her time on campus. She loved hosting students at The Residence for dessert and was a constant presence in the dining room and along the sidelines of athletic events. She was also a dedicated steward of The Residence and its garden.

Mrs. Wright was born in Liberty, SC and was raised in Lyman, SC. She was the oldest of five siblings. After graduating from high school, she attended Mars Hill College in North Carolina before graduating with a degree in English literature from Furman College.

Mrs. Wright is survived by her son, Jimmy, and by Mr. Wright.
